POPULATION OF PYGIMIES REDUCES

December 15th, 2008 by Administrator

The population of the Batwa Pygmies is reducing faster than that of any other minority communities in western uganda, writes Eddy Kirya.

Mr. Fredrick Wangabo the Executive Director of World peasants and indeginous Organisation said during the launch of a documentary on the Batwa entitled, “Global Warming, a complete experience with pygmies lives” at the Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala recently.

Uganda’s 2002 population census report put the Batwa at 6,705, but the pygmies had now reduced to 4,000, he disclosed.

The Batwa pygmies are indeginous people living in the forests of Kisoro and Kibale districts in western uganda.

Wangabo said, the Batwa people do not have access to adequate health facilities, food and even lack clean drinking water. Besides they are also being killed by the neighbouring commnuities.

This, according to the hotel managers, is intended to attract in more guests to utilise the facilities in the respective hotels and secondly as a way of rewarding loyal customers for the business support through out the year 2008. Some of the hotels that have offered these lucrative rates include the Sheraton Hotel, Ranch on the Lake, Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort, Jinja Nile Resort to mention but a few.

This we believe will encourage and enable many more ugandans and foreign visitors arrange to take holidays this festive season.
