CHILD PROTECTION SEMINAR AT HOTEL AFRICANA

Hotel Africana on recently hosted a seminar on child protection organized by the African Network for the Prevention and Protection Against Child Abuse and Neglect.

The seminar noted that children are Abused, trafficked and smuggled into the United Kingdom to work as sex slaves, domestic servants and as labourers in car washing bays and restaurants. According to the New Scotland Yard after a three-month study, 522 unaccompanied African children arrived in the UK last year at Heathrow Airport and many were victims of child trafficking.

The African countries were asked to set up child protection programmes, as well as recommended that embassies monitor and help children who go abroad.

KAMPALA SERENA HOTEL HOSTS MICROSOFT LAUNCH

Microsoft, the software giant released the latest Software versions of its flagship solutions on the Ugandan market at Kampala Serena Hotel.

The versions which include Microsoft Office 2007, Windows Vista and Windows Exchange are aimed at helping business and home-users to have access to the best looking, more secure and most user friendly versions of Microsoft software and the experience will increase productivity.

HOTEL STAFF UNDERGOING TRAINING FOR CHOGM

Fresher courses are being attended by all Hotel staff who will be attending to guests during the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in November.

The refresher training courses being handled by Universal Institute for Securities in Investments and Kenya Utalii College, are aimed at equiping hotel staff with modern skills on how to handle high profile delegates, as well as sharpen the staff ahead of Chogm.

The training is organised by the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Industry, and is targeting hotel in-service staff in the districts of Kampala, Jinja, Mukono and Wakiso.

4000 ROOMS FOR CHOGM

4000 roms have been identified for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in November.

The classification that covered 50 hotels Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso was carried out in February identified and segmented hotels in classes which include the High Upmarket hotel rooms totalling 1,779, 1,209 Mid-Upper Market rooms, 1,030 Mid-Market rooms and 1,013 Budget Market units. Several personal houses have passed the test,and more are to be identified.

Hotel rooms include 108 deluxe rooms, 32 executive rooms, eight executive suites, three businessman’s suites and one presidential suite at Kampala Serena Hotel, Imperial Royale will have 212 rooms, two of which are presidential suites and the rest executive rooms. 115 rooms, 24 deluxe rooms, three suites,88 twin bedrooms all with balconies at Hotel Africana, while 110 are under construction. The hotel also has gymnasium, a coffee shop, three restaurants and one bar. 500 rooms are under construction at Bwebajja Jogo Hotel on Entebbe Road. Hilton Hotel is still under construction. Imperial Resort Beach Hotel has 181 rooms and 362 beds and Speke Resort Munyonyo with 143 rooms where construction of 60 presidential suites is taking place.

The 4,000 rooms will accommodate delegates’ entourages, at least 1,500 journalists and other delegates.

COMMONWEALTH SECRETARIAT TEAM TO VISIT HOTELS

The Commonwealth Secretariat Team is in the country to make preparations for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)

The team which will prepare for the Commonwealth summit will also get a briefing on the preparations for the Commonwealth Heads Of Government Meeting (CHOGM), meet the National Task Force to get approximate completion dates for each project and agree on administrative arrangements as well as undertake site
visits to Serena conference center, Golf Course Hotel, Imperial Royale, Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort Hotel, Protea Hotel and Entebbe International Airport.

Team members include Matthew Neuhaus, the Director, Political Affairs Division (CHOGM conference secretary), Ayo Oke, from the office of the Deputy Secretary General, Eduardo Del Buey, Director Communications and Political Affairs (conference spokesperson), Henry Nyambu, Head of Information Technology and Lorna Mclaren, Head of Conferences and Manoah Esipisu, the Deputy Director Communications and Public Affairs.
