IMPERIAL RESORT BEACH HOTEL TO HOST CYF

Uganda is set to host the Commonwealth Youth Forum (CYF) Africa 2007, which will discuss critical issues that affect the youth.

The CYF which is the most important meetings held by the 53 Commonwealth countries will take place at the Imperial Resort Beach Hotel in Entebbe from November 13 to 20. Each of the 53 member states of the Commonwealth will send two youth representatives-a male and female, who will be selected from the different regions of the country, considering their age, gender, political affiliation and the institutions they represent.

The conference will focus on key areas of development and sustainability of young people, good governance, democracy and health. This will increase their knowledge and understanding of the Commonwealth through discussion of issues that directly affect their lives, interact with each other, create action plans and recommendations which will be presented to other common wealth meetings including the main Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, the Commonwealth Peoples Forum and the Foreign Ministers Forum.

The conference which will be held under the theme, Breaking Barriers: Increasing Young Peoples’ Potential for Development, will be officially opened by the host president, Yoweri Museveni and closed by Don McKinnon the Secretary General of the Commonwealth.

HOTELS TO DISPLAY CULTURE AT CHOGM

Selected Hotels will display the diverse and complex cultures of Uganda in the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) with an objective to promote cross-country culture and recognize all ethnic groupings in order for them to build a stronger cultural heritage.

Hotels like Africana and the Golf Course will exhibit and showcase Uganda’s diverse cultures through holding a trade fair and part of the exhibition, portraying local products, art and cultural activities to the delegates and general public. Local culture will be portrayed in form of music, photography, dance, art pieces, and sculptures.Hotel Africana has also been earmarked to host the Commonwealth People’s Forum and one of the activities of the forum is an exhibition of different activities of civil society.

The Exhibition will also take place at other venues including the National Theater and the Uganda Museum. The National Theater being a cultural center, will be upgraded.The Theater is within easy reach of hotels like Serena and Sheraton, which will be accommodating some of the guests. The gardens will host a crafts village and a general exhibition. Various exhibitions including arts, handcrafts, literature, fashion design and traditional foods and medicine,will arranged for the function.

HOTEL STAFF TRAINING TO BE PAID FOR BY GOVERNMENT

The government will pay for the Hotel staff training ahead of the commonwealth heads of government meeting, due to take place in November 2007.

Training clinics will be set up by government, which has promised to pay for the costs involved in order to ensure that the guests get prompt and efficient service from hotel staff during the commonwealth period.

The training will be done with the help of Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association (UHOA) and it will cover three weeks of intensive training at the hotels to train specialist staff including departments like the front desk, food and beverage production (i.e bar and restaurant), accounting and public relations, laundry, security, maintenance and house-keeping.

Recruits to be trained will come from existing hotels and restaurants and while others will be recruits from school like the Hotel Tourism Training Institute (HTTI).

HILTON HOTEL SOON TO BE COMPLETED

Kampala Hilton Hotel construction by the Aya Group will soon be completed.

The Hotel still under construction is awaiting new construction technology from Germany, which will take about 3 months to arrive in the country. The Technology will make the work faster.

The chairman of the Aya Group, Mohamed Hamid said that the $90m (sh158.4b) will be ready for the Commonwealth meeting due in November 2007.

AIRPORT VIEW HOTEL UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Airport View Terrace Hotel construction has commenced with plans to increase the hotel’s rooms from 12 to 35.

The Hotel is also recruiting and training in-house and in liaison staff, with the help of Uganda Hotel Owners Association, and is expected to recruit more people on completion of construction to add on the 24 existing staff. Entebbe Municipal Council has been contacted to repair the access road to the hotel.

The Hotel will host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting delegates.
