Hotels that do not meet required standards have been urged to upgrade.
In a survey conducted by the Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Industry,districts of Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso in May and June were surveyed. This was to evaluate the state of readiness of hotels for the CHOGM meeting in 2007, and was also in preparation for the classification and grading of Hotels and accommodation facilities.
Hotels found with service defects like documented security policy, poor management of security matters, fire fighting equipment and escapes were urged to upgrade and improve their services in time for the common-wealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

Lodges and hotels in Lubaga Division were recently closed.
The deputy RDC, Fred Bamwine, who led the operation, said that the Hotels were found substandard, and were closed due to poor hygiene.

A team that will take part in the MTN marathon, has been named by Sheraton Hotel.
The proceeds of race that will take place on November 19, will go to the Uganda Red Cross Society to provide resources and facilities for expectant mothers in IDP camps in northern Uganda. This will be through the Mama Bag Appeal.
The race will feature the traditional 42km marathon,10km wheel chair category, 10km individual open, 10km corporate challenge and 10km for over 40 year category.

The hotel industry has been advised on hotel rates during the commonwealth summit.
The Hotel investors have been warned on hiking prices for the summit, and instead use the common wealth to boost the Hotel industry.
The common wealth team which was headed by Mr. Matthew Neuhaus,were impressed by the hotel developments and infrastructure, and were also positive that the grading of hotels will be done in time before November 2007.
Mr. Sam Kuteesa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said that he believed that the hotels will have reasonable prices, since the CHOGM was an opportunity to promote the country.

Hotel Africana is to host this year’s Investor of the Year Awards.
The awards that will be held on November 17 in Kampala are to Cost Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) Sh60 Million, which will be spent on awards, entertainment,venue, dinner and monitoring of the investors.
The Monitoring team will include Officials from the Uganda National Bureau of Standards,Uganda Journalists Association and the Uganda National Council of Science,Technology are part of the monitoring team and National Environmental Management Authority.
Director UIA, Kigozi Maggie said that Over 30 companieswill be participating in the event.
