CRISIS MEETING FOR HOTELIERS

August 3rd, 2006 by Administrator

Ugandan hoteliers have called for a crisis meeting next week.

The Hoteliers and Catering Association in conjunction with Federation of Uganda Employers are arranging a meeting with hotel owners to discuss ways through which they can address this problem so that we don’t miss out on the Chogm.

There is an impending ban on them to host delegates of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting next year for not having workers’s unions. The meeting was called after it emerged that only one hotel in the country - the Sheraton Kampala Hotel - has unionised workers.

Trade Unions act makes it clear that workers are free to join or belong to trade unions of their choice.

TRADE UNIONS IMPORTANT FOR HOTELS

August 2nd, 2006 by Administrator

Hotels in Uganda risk loosing out on chogm (Commonwealth heads of government meeting) if trade unions in the sector are not recognised by December.

Hotel employees should be allowed to form and belong to unions.
“I want to urge hotel employers to pay heed and recognise the unions,” Ms Hilda Musubira, the executive director of Chogm 2007, said. “Chogm is just around the corner. The unions must be recognised immediately. If this is not done, I will invoke the law without any hesitation.”

Parliament early this year passed four Bills to cater for workers’ rights, including the Trade Union Act, which gives workers of whatever number the right to form trade unions. The others are Occupational Safety and Health Act (formerly Factories Act); the Employment Act and the Labour Disputes Act (Arbitration and Settlement Act).

Leading the campaign is the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers Associations (IUF), which lodged a petition last month in Geneva, Switzerland, saying that Ugandan hotels should not host delegates to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting because they do not recognise trade unions.
